Wine has always been an integral part of life on Mount Athos. The history began with the myth of the furious giant Athos threw a massive rock against the sea god Poseidon. But the rock fell under the eastern corner of the then two-fingered Halkidiki peninsula and created the third finger of the peninsula : Mount Athos. Today, Mount Athos is an independent monastic community of Christian Orthodox monks. For more than 1 000 years, wine has always been an integral part of life on Mount Athos and vine cultivation one of the most important occupations of the monks.
